October 17, 2015 Sunrise

Sunrise - officially at 7:20AM here in Central PA, unofficially at 8:30AM at The Puddle Pond on the first day of the newest chapter of my life - retirement.
To quote a friend from the library:
I don't want to
I don't have to
You can't make me
I'm retired.

Hope you are having as beautiful day as I am.

Myrtle Beach, SC

We left central Pennsylvania on Friday morning and the further south we drove, the harder the rain fell.  The overhead signs flashed flood warnings and at times it was hard to see but we made it to Smithfield, SC close to dinner time.  After dinner at a nearby restaurant, the remainder of the evening was spent in our hotel room relaxing and preparing for an early morning departure to finish the trip to Myrtle Beach.

The rain continued to fall all night and the next morning.  We arrived at sister J and brother-in-law B's condo near lunchtime.  We stashed our belongings at the condo and headed out for lunch at Broadway Billy's.  Everyone got something different and my shrimp po' boy was delicious.  The photos of the condo were taken at the request of sister-in-law V who vacations at Myrtle Beach with her husband, but they travel in an RV.  The accomodations are excellent.

There was a trip to the grocery store to pick up perishables and other items for the week.  The rain stopped long enough for sister J and I to walk the beach and gather some shells before the deluge began again.  During a break in the clouds and downpour, I managed to capture a couple who were having wedding pictures taken on the beach in the late afternoon.  The picture taking went on for quite some time and the photographer and his assistant were busy beavers.  The photographer certainly earned his wages, as we saw him laying on the sand to get pictures from ground level.

It rained off and on, at times absolutely pouring Sunday and Monday too.  While sister J and I managed to take a morning walk every day, most of our time until Tuesday was spent in the unit.  The governor of the state of South Carolina asked that people stay put due to flooding, closed roads, etc. and we complied.  I knit a little on another pair of socks I'm making, I began reading one of the books I took along (Circling the Sun - an excellent book) and we played pinochle.  Later in the week, sister J got me started on putting together jig saw puzzles on my IPad.

The sunrise and sunset photos from the week are beautiful and will be posted here next time.
I need to get "caught up" on posting because this Saturday is a special day and the post that day will be devoted to that occasion.

Hoping you are having a good week wherever you are.  Now that we are back home, fall is here and the leaves are changing and there's a difference in the air.  While I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in SC last week, I love this area and especially the change in the seasons.

Pine Creek Gorge (Pennsylvania Grand Canyon)

This is a picture heavy post of some of the photos taken on our trip to Potter County.  Most of the pictures are from various vantage points from Leonard Harrison State Park (the East Rim) and Colton Point State Park (the West rim) of Pine Creek Gorge.  The distance to the bottom of the gorge was a long way down (elevation at the east rim was 1833 feet) and the look down at times made me dizzy.  The little blueish-green house at that bottom of the gorge is one of a very few properties that are on private land.  The leaves hadn't really begun to change colors while we were there but the scenery couldn't be topped for its natural beauty.

On the day we traveled to the town of Wellsboro, the weather was chilly so we stopped at the Wellsboro Diner for pie and coffee.  The feel of the town is quaint and the town has a Victorian Christmas celebration every year.  Fezz's Diner serves a delicious burger and homemade potato chips.

The weekend after we returned home from our trip north, Mr P celebrated a milestone class reunion.  There was a dinner for just the his class on Friday evening and about 29 classmates came from near and far to gather and reminisce about the past and catch up on the here and now.  Saturday morning we squeezed in a yard sale at sister J's and this was followed by a dinner and a program in the evening for all graduates of the high school Mr P attended.

We had a few days after the class reunion to begin to prepare for a week's trip to Myrtle Beach, SC with sister J and her husband B. I'll be back with pictures from that trip next time.
