The End is Near

Last Monday was a Federal holiday and I had the day off work.  The weather was favorable for working on the log pile.  Last spring, 20 ton of firewood in the form of felled trees was delivered by a logging company.  When we order a load, the trees are transported on a semi and off-loaded with a picker and piled in the upper portion at the side of our driveway.
The trees need to be sawed into lengths that fit the firebox on our wood stove and then subsequently split. Our home has an oil fired hot air furnace; however, ever since OnlyDaughter was three years old, we have tried to cut and split firewood to heat the house.  Years ago it was not as hard on the back as it now is but Mr P persists in ordering when the stacked rows start to diminish.
The pile never seems to get smaller to me even though we work on it whenever time and the weather permit.
When the tarp was rolled back on the pile last week, I was overjoyed to see daylight shining through the pile from one side to the other.

We split and stacked in the wagon for a good hour.

When the wagon was full, there was a small pile of logs left (not enough to fill another wagon load) along with some smaller chunks that aren't firebox length.  The wagon load was taken down to the house and Mr P stacked it behind the shed while I made a trip to the grocery store.  When I returned home, I discovered that not only was all the wood in the trailer stacked but the remaining wood along the driveway was loaded into the trailer and brought down to the house to be split at a later date.  The only thing left along the driveway are a few more of the chunks which can be loaded into the wheelbarrow to be brought down to the house.
What a great feeling to get the wood done and the pile cleared out.  There are still the trees that were cut down at The Puddle Pond when the power company came through to saw and split.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some baking.  The title of this cookbook says it all.

I didn't use a recipe from this book to make chocolate whoopie pies but a recipe I've used for years from a cookbook published by a women's club back in the 70's.  You can see the chocolate batter in the bowl and scooped on the cookie sheet.  I got the chance to use the cookie scoops that were a Christmas gift from Mr. P.  The cookies were nice and uniform which is great since the white filling gets sandwiched between two cookies.

Whoopie pies sold in stores in the area are ususally wrapped in cling wrap and the cookie sticks to the wrap.  You can spend a lot of time just trying to get every bit off that wrap.  I wrap mine in waxed paper but if you don't eat them within a few days, they tend to dry out.  To avoid just this problem, a delivery was made to the neighbors in the evening and the next day a bagful was taken to work for my coworkers.

Snow fell overnight on Wednesday into Thursday.  The drive into work was slippery but I made it without a mishap.  Here is a picture of The Puddle Pond taken in the afternoon.  Temperatures have been very cold and underneath that layer of snow there is ice.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr P was headed out to get wood off the porch to add to the fire.  When he went to open the front door, there were about 10-12 deer on the right side of the drive.  They were meandering slowly across the driveway headed into the woods on the left.

We watched them for 10-15 minutes.  There was one young deer who was feeling it's oats.  It kept running in the front yard, kicking up its heels and bumping into the others as it frolicked around.  As the herd moved off into the woods, the energetic one kept running and hopping around having a good time.

Once in the woods they moved down along the left hand side of our propery, crossed the stream and eventually made their way to the snow covered corn field behind our property.  They were beautiful to watch but they will be the same ones who will decimate my garden this summer.  Oh well.

Hope you are staying warm wherever you are.  There is to be a sloppy mix again tomorrow morning in time for the commute to work again.
Have a good weekend wherever you are.

Brrr, it's winter

After a cold walk at 6AM on Saturdays and Sundays with walking buddy, R, smoke from our wood stove is a welcome sight.  Today was not as cold as yesterday morning's walk, but the wind has picked up since lunch.  That wind is ushering in a frigid blast from the west.  We are to have cold, cold days and even colder nights this coming week.

I haven't been as diligent as I wanted to be in 2013 with my desire to post at least once a week.

New Year's came and went and here we are past the middle of January already.  The flu that everyone is talking about and a lot of people are catching is making the rounds at work.  I haven't had a flu shot in years and didn't get one again this year so I try to do all the things necessary to try and keep from getting it.  Most people that I know who have had the flu have been sick for a lengthy period of time and have had reoccurances after they thought they were rid of the nasty bug.

The week following New Years, the Farm Show opened at of all places the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg.  This is a yearly agricultural show that runs for a week and historically, the notion is if there is going to be bad weather (snow, sleet, etc) it will happen during Farm Show week.  Not so this year.  The weather was lovely and while I haven't attended the show in years, attendance was good from the articles written in the paper.

On one of our early morning walks, R, my walking buddy mentioned that while doing some Christmas shopping last year she found and purchased a head lamp to wear when we walk in the dark, early morning hours. In mentioning it to Mr P, I discovered that he had one still in its original box stored in his work area in the basement.  R and I decided to give them a try and boy are they great.  I still carry the nice flashlight that was one of my Xmas gifts from Mr P just for my walking forays but the head lamps are a great addition.  At their highest setting, they illuminate a large part of the side of the roadway for us.
We wear them on the walk out and are able to turn them off on the return trip about halfway back.
Don't tell Grandsons #1 and #2, but we purchased one for each of them and set them aside for Christmas 2013.

Happy Birthday to OnlySonInLaw who celebrated his birthday last Thursday.  I decided to make him a do-rag for under his motorcycle helmet.  (Bikes are stored now for the winter months but he can pull it out in the spring to wear.)  I found this pirate fabric which coordinates with his black and silver bike and shows his love of all things pirate related.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ONLYSONINLAW!  Many more to you!

My hope is to work on crafting this year more than I did last year.  The do-rag was the start.  I'm working on something for Grandson #2's birthday which is in March and also have a pair of socks I've been knitting.  I want to knit a pair of socks for everyone this year, a goal for last year which I didn't meet.
Well, dinner is finished (roast chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy and corn) and the dishes are done.  I will make myself a cup of tea and work on the knitted socks for a while this afternoon.  Football and ice hockey will be on the TV today.  Don't forget, Downton Abbey is on this evening.  Oh and Go Ravens!!
Have a good weekend whever you are and stay warm.

Happy New Year!

Here is the first of the month picture of The Puddle Pond.  It's been cold here lately and there is a thin layer of ice coating the surface.  It's not thick enough to hold any real weight and we are to have warmer weather next week so no chance of it freezing over anytime soon.

New Years Eve was quiet here and the princess of the household, Chance, sends her wish for everyone to have a happy and most importantly healthy New Year!

Hope you are having a good start to the weekend no matter where you are.
